Primary Responsibilities:
- Emergency Response: Respond to fire alarms, medical emergencies, and hazardous material incidents.
- Fire Suppression: Operate fire hoses, ladders, and extinguishing equipment to combat fires.
- Rescue Operations: Perform rescues in emergency situations, including structure fires and vehicle accidents.
- Medical Aid: Provide first aid and CPR to injured individuals; EMT training may be required.
- Fire Prevention: Educate the public on fire safety, conduct fire inspections, and enforce fire codes.
- Equipment Maintenance: Regularly check and maintain firefighting equipment and vehicles.
- Training: Participate in ongoing training exercises and drills to stay current with firefighting techniques and safety protocols.
- Report Writing: Document incident reports and maintain accurate records of firefighting activities.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Physical Fitness: Must meet physical requirements and be able to perform strenuous tasks.
- Communication Skills: Ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively in high-pressure situations.
- Problem-Solving: Quick thinking and decision-making skills in emergencies.
- Certifications: Required certifications may include Firefighter I and II, EMT or Paramedic certification, and Hazardous Materials training.
- Education: High school diploma or GED; some departments may prefer or require an associate degree in fire science.
Working Conditions:
- Firefighters work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and may be on call for emergencies. The job can be physically demanding and involves exposure to hazardous conditions.
